Patient education may be one of the most deficient areas of the healthcare system today. Nationwide, about one-half of all patients report feeling confused after visits with their doctors. This is ironic in light of legislation mandating that providers now receive “informed consent” from their patients for just about every treatment or procedure they prescribe. How can the patient give informed consent when they are confused and do not have all the facts? When they are not truly informed?
Certified Patient Services, LLC is passionate about giving their clients as much current information as possible, beginning with the basics of how their body works and continuing with what causes their symptoms and what they might mean, the implications and prognosis of any conditions they may have been diagnosed with, and the pros and cons of all available treatment options (including the option not to treat and possible alternative therapies, neither of which are addressed by most doctors). There are many reasons why a provider might not take the time to properly educate, but the most common reason is likely financial — their hands are tied by today’s healthcare system that simply will not reimburse them for the time this takes.
Most of us have a certain level of trust in the providers we see, otherwise we would not continue seeing them. But most of us would not sign off on the purchase of a used car without test driving it or at least looking at it. Should we really be signing off on medication or surgery before we know all the facts?
